  Please note that our CDM nurses can and do undertake medicine reviews as part of your regular chronic disease checks. It is not necessary to make a separate appointment with one of the GP's simply to review medication. Any changes to medication will be reviewed by the nurse with a GP who will authorise any medication changes.

Specialist Nurse

Sister Deb Garside is fully qualified to diagnose and treat a variety of common complaints that afflict patients of all ages. e.g.

• Respiratory—coughs, colds, hayfever
• Ear, Nose or Throat infections 
• Abdominal—stomach pain, vomiting 
• Skin—rashes, athlete’s foot 
• Eyes—conjunctivitis, dry eye 
• Urinary infections 
• Family Planning—pill prescriptions 
• Sexual health issues

Sister Garside is our senior practice nurse and many patients will know her well through her work with our long term illness clinics. She is also responsible for nurse training & development in the practice.

Consultations with our Specialist Nurse are supported by our GP's who are available at any time should your symptoms not indicate one of the common complaints noted above.

We offer appointments throughout the week to patients who feel that they need to be seen on a day.

Travel Clinic

Please note that travel to certain parts of the world may require more than one vaccination, some of which can only be given over a period of one month. It is important therefore that patients intending to travel abroad contact us at least SIX WEEKS before their intended date of travel.

We may not be able provide effective medical support if insufficient notice is given 

To help us offer the appropriate advice, please print out and complete our Travel Questionnaire below before coming to visit the Nurse.

Travel Questionnaire

Beech House has a nurse specialising in travel medicine and immunisations and the surgery is a registered Yellow Fever Centre. If you require any vaccinations relating to foreign travel you can make an appointment with the practice nurse to discuss your arrangements.  This will include which countries and areas within countries that you are visiting to determine what vaccinations are required. To assist this process you will be asked to complete a Travel Questionnaire - this can be downloaded using the link below. (Requires Adobe Acrobat software). 

It is important to make this initial appointment as early as possible  - at least 8 weeks before you travel - as a second appointment will be required with the practice nurse to actually receive the vaccinations. Your second appointment needs to be at least 2 weeks before you travel to allow the vaccines to work.

Most travel vaccines are ordered on a private prescription and these incur a charge over and above the normal prescription charge.  This is because travel vaccination is not included in the services provided by the NHS and therefore is a chargeable service.

We can also advice on suitable drugs such as anti-malaria tablets, needle packs and other travellers' equipment.

Non-NHS Services

Beech House Surgery, as well as being a Yellow Fever centre (see 'Travel Clinic'), is pleased to provide additional medical services not provided by the NHS such as

• Medical examinations— for HGV/Taxi medicals or for other employment needs.
• Medical Certificates completed for private health insurance and other Insurance reports, fitness to travel and incapacity benefits.

A fee will be payable by a registered NHS patient for one of these or other services

Referrals to Secondary Care

The government has advertised extensively that patients have choice about where they have their hospital treatment. We applaud thed esire to provide the best possible service for the convenience of patients. In our experience, patients mainly want to be treated in hospitals that are local to their homes, as soon as is practicable, and within a caring and high quality health environment.

Once the doctor has indicated that a referral is appropriate, he/she will inform the patient that a choice of hospitals or clinics is available. At that point, the patient can decide where they would like to go for treatment.

Patients should call the booking centre to make an appointment convenient to them. Alternatively a booking can be made over the internet.

The system is designed to give patients flexibility about when and where they are treated. 

Self-Certificates

• You do not normally need a doctor's certificate for the first seven days of illness.
• Statutory Sick Pay Regulations state that employers are required to accept self-certification - completed by you - for the first seven days of illness.
• These certificates are available from the surgery or by downloading one and printing it yourself by clicking here.

All employers must comply with these regulations

• You do not require ANY form of certificate for the first 4 days off work.
• If you take more than four and up to seven days off, you must complete a self certificate.
• Any time off over seven days requires a doctor's certificate and you will need to visit a doctor to obtain this.

Private Sick Notes

• Some employers or insurance schemes may ask you to provide a private sick note.
• There will be a fee if you require a private sick note for the first seven days of your illness.
• The surgery will be able to advise of the current fee or click here for a list of charges.
• It would be expected that an employer would cover this cost for you as a sick note is not normally required to the first seven days of illness.
